Having signed Petr Cech from Chelsea, Arsenal now have in their ranks another key piece to their Premier League puzzle for just under £11million.
Cech may be 33, but in goalkeeping terms, that’s hardly over the hill and for a keeper of his stature, experience and ability, and so his £11million transfer fee seems like an absolute steal.
Former Chelsea man Ray Wilkins agrees as he told Sky Sports: ‘I’m extremely surprised and I thought Chelsea might have offloaded him into Europe somewhere.
‘He’s been a fantastic servant for the club and the service he’s given the club has been unbelievable.
‘I think [Chelsea have] done him a favour. Whether they’ve done themselves a favour is another question because with Petr going to Arsenal it reinforces their ability to be contenders for the Premier League title.
‘I’m slightly surprised Chelsea have allowed him to go to another Premier League club. I think Petr will give a great deal to Arsenal and it’s Chelsea’s loss. I’m pleased we’ll get to see him in the Premier League week in, week out now.
‘It is absolutely a bargain. Bearing in mind he never played last year, so in football terms he’s 32, not 33. He’s got eight years left at the top level.’
Cech’s fee will make him the sixth most expensive goalkeeper in history and because of this weird quirk in the game, Arsenal get to add a world class player to their ranks and still keep enough in their infamous warchest to pay the inflated fees for outfield players to help complete their puzzle and turn them into genuine title contenders.
And they get him from Chelsea against Jose Mourinho’s wishes.
It’s a beautiful transfer in so many ways.
