West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has refused to rule out a move for Jack Wilshere.
Sullivan confirmed he still wants to sign “one or two more players” this window to continue a stunning spending spree.
Asked if Arsenal star Wilshere could be one of them, Sullivan said:
“I can’t comment on players on other clubs but all I would say is midfield is not a position we’re looking for.
“We’ve got very good midfielders at the club but never say never.”
The Hammers yesterday announced they’d completed a £16million for Javier Hernandez – days after breaking their transfer record to sign Marko Arnautovic.
They join Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta in agreeing moves to the London Stadium.
Sullivan admitted the West Ham transfer strategy is flawed but revealed it’s down to a change of approach at the top.
He said: “We had a policy up to now to buy players for tomorrow, not today.
“We made a decision with manager [Slaven Bilic] to buy players proven in the Premier League, who’ve been here before and who are of an age where they’re not being bought for tomorrow – but today.
“Long term it’s not a great strategy but short term it is.
“Hopefully we’ll buy one or two more players, investments in the future, while at the same time doing what’s best for the club.”
On their business so far, Sullivan added:
“We’ve been working very long and hard to get them.
“A few days ago we had one deal in the bag, which was Mr Zabaleta, which I still think is a fantastic signing.
“We happened to pull together three in a week but these days they take forever.
“They’re becoming longer and harder with demands of players, demands of clubs and their valuations.
“We’re holding our mouths open and we can’t believe what’s going on.”
