Arsenal have won the Emirates Cup on goal difference despite slumping to a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla this Sunday.
The Gunners won the competition after coming from behind twice against Benfica to secure a 5-2 win.
And with the competition over, here are NINE lessons Arsene Wenger MUST learn ahead of our season’s curtain raiser clash against Chelsea next weekend.
1. Lacazette will score goals and win us games.
Arsenal summer club record signing, Alexandre Lacazette, scored his first goal for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday on his first start for the club.
Arsenal struggled to find the net all through the game and Lacazette was on hand to put the Gunners in front from a Chamberlain low cross that was missed by Welbeck inside the box.
His position was exceptional to find the back of the net and had he not been on the pitch, Arsenal may have well lost that match by 2-0 and ultimately, the Emirates Cup.
One thing that is beginning to look certain is that, Lacazette will surely score crucial goals for Arsenal this season.
2. Alexis must stay as he has a key role to play.
Arsenal contract-rebel Alexis Sanchez was absent from the tournament due to extended holiday and an illness. But deep down inside, we all know had the Chilean been involved in our just concluded pre-season and the Emirates Cup would had have seen a much more threatening Arsenal attack.
Yes, Alexis must stay!, even if not for the fact that he would be key in our attack, but for Arsenal to for once show that it is not all about making money and also that players would not come here and use us as a stepping stone in their careers as stars have done in the past.
3. Giroud will prove key in the run-in
Olivier Giroud, one of Arsenal most criticized players in recent times.
He is not the quickest, the most skilfull or even a 20-goal a season striker, but Giroud’s ability to stay fit almost all season and also as an option coming from the bench cannot be over emphasized.
Arsenal are well known for injuries and running out of steam during the most crucial part of the season. But a Giroud option will surely prove key with the burden of banging in the goals for most part of the season have been taken off him with the signing of Lacazette and Alexis being another option.
4. Arsenal still need to perfect the 3-4-3 formation
For most part of the pre-season and Emirates Cup, Wenger opted for the 3-4-3 formation.
And although we can’t fully access the strategy used throughout the last couple of weeks with Wenger switching sides almost completely, one thing was clear, we still need to improve on the 3-4-3 formation.
Theres too much dependence on the wings and not enough penetration from the centre by Arsenal coupled with the number of goals that was shipped-in the last two weeks.
5. Reiss Nelson must stay!
Arsenal fans were awakened by the hugely impressive teenager throughout the pre-season, with Wenger saying he may well keep the young lad in the squad and even play him further up the pitch.
His assist for Giroud’s goal was simply impeccable crowning up a totally impressive pre-season. And just like how Alex Iwobi was promoted two season’s ago, Reiss MUST be promoted.
6. Chamberlain must stay
The Ox has come up in transfer news lately for his reported contract saga. And despite his injury worries, the midfielder has proved key for Arsenal in recent seasons. Therefore, he must NOT be allowed to join Chelsea or any other club this summer.
7. Arsenal are a tad short in natural wingers…Mahrez or Lemar to help
Arsenal have just Iwobi, Sanchez and Ox as natural wingers at Arsenal. This is not good for a side that wants to win the league.
Arsenal will need at least one, if not two more wingers to cement our attack from the wings, and no better stars to do that as Lemar and or Mahrez.
8. With Elneny in defence one more defensive midfielder needed.
Wenger described Elneny as a “perfect ball-playing defender”. This words confirm that we have signed a new center back.
However, Wenger should not forget that we would be short in strong defensive midfielder as Coquelin and Xhaka alone cannot handle the burden all season long, meaning he MUST sign another defensive midfielder this summer!
9. Kolasinac is a STEAL!
You all saw the effort he put in to create the assist for Walcott? Plus his involvement in the two other goals? Good, let me just remind you that he was bought for free and will push Arsenal even further to a fantastic season! Nothing more to say!
