Southampton winger Soufal Boufal was a target of Arsenal before he joined the Saints in the just concluded transfer window, the player’s agent has confirmed.
Arsenal were linked with a number of attacking players in the summer and Boufal was one of them. Wenger was keen on strengthening his squad as he attempts to lead the troop to the Premier League title this season, having failed to do so in the past twelve seasons.
Signing a world class striker and a quality winger was Wenger’s priority and Boufal’s agent Yvan Le Mee has admitted his client was on the French man’s wish list.
Arsenal were linked with Riyad Mahrez for almost the entire summer but Leicester City were reluctant to sell their star man and Wenger considered making a move for Boufal who ended up signing for Southampton.
Mee claimed PSG, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Southampton were in the race to sign the winger but it was the presense of Claude Puel at the St Mary’s that convinced Boufal to join Southampton.
Mee told SFR Sport : “We especially talked with PSG. If Laurent (Blanc) had stayed at PSG, he would certainly have gone there because they would have done things quickly.
“We had Arsenal when they lost the track of (Riyad) Mahrez … Finally, they had reconnected.
“We had Tottenham and Chelsea, but (Antonio) Conte was not hot on him.”
Wenger’s interest in Boufal was understandable after Walcott and Chamberlain failed to impress last season but the French boss dropped the idea of signing a winger by deciding to trust his players.
