Arsenal were interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko in the summer transfer window, according to the player’s agent.

Zinchenko joined Manchester City in July after an impressive outing in the Euro 2016 competition for Ukraine and his agent has now revealed that Wenger was one of the managers that was impressed with his performance in the summer championships.

The centre midfielder was relatively unknown before the summer competition but his performances brought him to lime light. The player’s agent Sandor Varga has now explained how desperate Wenger was to sign the player after the competition. But he wasn’t able to persuade the player to snub a move to the Etihad.

Varga told Russian outlet Championat, as quoted by The Express: “Wenger called and said: ‘I have need for that player.

“‘He’s going to play in the first team. I know he is only seventeen, but I’m going to write a letter to his family that I will take care of him when he is with us and he’ll play in the first team.’

“Arsene had seen a youth game of Shakhtar and took 20 minutes to assess the potential of Oleksandr.

“Wenger asked me ten times about Zinchenko and I later informed him and felt even a bit sad because I couldn’t help him.”

Zinchenko has since been loaned out to Dutch side PSV where he has made six appearances this season.

This makes me wonder why a player would ignore a club who has promised him a place in the first team for one that doesn’t even have a plan for him anytime soon.

Had Zinchenko made the move to Arsenal, he would have been training alongside world class players and playing for the first team but now he is currently on loan at PSV where he isn’t even playing regularly.

It’s his decision anyway, i’m sure Wenger has moved on, so has the player.
