Arsene Wenger has responded to Paul Scholes claim that Arsenal are more than happy to finish in the top four every season.

The former Manchester United man slammed his former club after their performance against Liverpool on Thursday while also taking a swipe at the Gunners in the process. Scholes said: “Manchester United should be competing to win the Premier League and Champions League every season,” Scholes told BT Sport.

“The last thing I want for them is to be happy with finishing fourth and winning the FA Cup. That’s what Arsenal do ever year. You see them celebrate out on the pitch when they come fourth in the Premier League. That can’t happen at United.”

According to London24, Wenger was asked in his press conference on Friday if he see’s Scholes’ comments as disrespectful or valid. Wenger failed to criticize the former United legend but said there should be mutual respect between managers and former players.

“I have my own problems and my own critics and on top of that I do not want Manchester United’s on my back,” Wenger joked. “I cannot answer for how Paul Scholes feels and what he thinks about the situation.

“I want everybody to be respected – I know it’s not very popular any more but if I ask you if you want to be respected you will say yes.”

Wenger however insisted his side are playing to win the title and believes his side can win the League title despite sitting nine points behind League leaders Leicester City.

“At the moment it can look pretentious to think we are still in the fight but mentally we are,” he said. “We want to make sure we keep focused on what we want to do and go as high as we can.

“We are not in the mode of just making sure we finish in the top four, maybe it will be the case and if we do not play well we will not even be in the top four. But we want to continue to fight to have a chance to win the Premier League. “I feel we can go on a run but that can change quickly. We lost two games and it looked like we would play in the Championship next year. Game by game we cannot afford any more slip-ups.
