Jan Oblak could be on the move this summer with Arsenal among a number of top teams interested in making a move for the 25-year-old.
The Gunners are believed to be on the hunt for a new goalkeeper ahead of next season as Petr Cech continues to underwhelm between the sticks at the Emirates.
Having sold Wojciech Szczesny to Juventus last summer for just £10m, there is something of a void in the succession plan in goal at the Emirates.
Matt Macey has just one senior appearance to his name while Emiliano Martinez has only recently begun to get game time in the league this season following his summer loan move to Getafe.
All this means that Arsenal are expected to look further afield in order to find a replacement for Cech – who could leave at the end of the season – with Oblak believed to be top of Sven Mislintat’s list.
The Slovenian keeper handed the Gunners a boost this week as he admitted that he does not know quite where his future lies.
“It’s tough to discuss the future,” Oblak said, as quoted by the Evening Standard.
“It’s not easy to talk about what’s going to happen tomorrow never mind what will happen next season, but I am calm and the situation depends on Atletico – nobody knows the future.
“There’s nothing new, there have been a lot of things said and written about a new contract but the only confirmed situation is that there is nothing new.
“I have a contract that I signed two years ago, but now I must wait to see what Atleti’s plan is.”
Any Arsenal move for Oblak appears to depend on the Gunners’ ability to achieve Champions League qualification for next season.
Ironically, their only remaining route to Europe’s elite competition could pit them against Oblak’s Atletico Madrid as both sides hunt for Europa League glory, meaning they may have to break the 25-year-old’s heart in order to make it worth his while to join.
