Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes the season isn’t yet over for the team and has called on the club’s strikers to recover their lethal touch in front of goal.

The Gunners are currently in a poor run of form losing five of their last seven games including the the second leg Round of 16 champions League clash against Barcelona and Wenger has received the stick for the team’s recent performance.

Supporters clashed outside the Emirates stadium on Sunday when Arsenal lost 1-2 to Watford courtesy goals from Odion Ighalo and Adlene Guedioura.

The result ended the team’s chances of winning the FA Cup title this season leaving the club with little chance to win a trophy this term as we currently sit 11 points behind league leaders Leicester City.

The club fans are asking the manager to step down from his position and Mertesacker has come to Wenger’s defense claiming there is still a lot to play for this season.

“You have to give credit because we kept going and created chance after chance, but at the moment we lack that killer instinct.

“It looks like we play, and play and play until the opposing team scores. That is something we need to work on”

“We need to work on that if we want to be successful in the Premier League.”

“It is as you can imagine, we are out of the competition and the dream is over, that is (the) conclusion of today’s game,” he said when asked about his disappointment after the game.

“The season is not over. We play in a confident way, we maybe lack that bit at the end.

“What is really important in football, to be successful we need to score. The desire to play together and to be good at a team is there, you can feel that, even if there is a bit of negativity I can understand.”

“What we do lack at the moment is we need to score at some point,” he added.
