Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged Mesut Ozil to improve the defensive aspect of his game. The former Arsenal man was speaking on Ozil’s performance against Bournemouth and he believes the German needs to do more for the team defensively.
Undoubtedly, Ozil is one of the best creative players in the game but most times the German has been criticized for his minimal contributions in games where Arsenal need to be strong defensively and Keown is the latest player to slam the German’s defensive play.
In our 3-1 win against Bournemouth, Ozil’s inefficiency off the ball was obvious again as Bournemouth controlled the midfield for majority of the game.
Mohammed Elneny and Granit Xhaka were most times outnumbered in midfield and Keown believes that wouldn’t have happened if Ozil helped out defensively.
“Bournemouth outnumbered Arsenal in the middle, Keown told BBC.
“Arsenal played with Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain and Theo Walcott .
They were very much out-and- out wingers.”
“They need to learn to get back into covering positions so Arsenal don’t become outnumbered. Ozil has got to do more when they are out of possession.
“He’s great in possession, a wonderful player. But when they are playing with two out-and-out wingers he has to pop back in.”
Keown does have a point though, Ozil could have done a lot better defensively but we must also understand that defending has never been part of the German’s game.
I personally think the German can contribute defensively his own way and not necessarily track back. He just needs to be further up the pitch where he would be more dangerous.
