Arsene Wenger has hailed Arsenal star Theo Walcott, claiming the winger is now a different player from the one of last season.
Walcott had a poor season last year and was linked with a number of clubs in the summer transfer window but the player decided against leaving the club, instead choosing to stay and fight for his future at the Emirates.
The winger has been on fire since the start of the current season and Wenger has claimed he is a “completely different player” this season.
Walcott scored his third league goal of the campaign against Chelsea on Saturday and Wenger hailed his performance after the game.
“You cannot question his performance,” Wenger told a news conference.
“But I believe more the change in Theo Walcott is his attitude to this season. He’s ready to fight, commit and straight away he gets the crowd behind him.
“Theo Walcott of that stature is a completely different player.”
It wasn’t just Walcott, the team’s performance in general was impressive and Wenger was happy with the general performance.
The win was Arsenal’s first against Chelsea since 2011 and it came at a perfect time as the boss celebrated his 20 years anniversary at the club. After 20 years, Wenger insists he is hungrier than ever to win trophies for the club.
“I’m hungrier because I know I don’t have 20 years in front of me,” the Frenchman said.
“Also I feel more responsibility, you’re not 20 years somewhere and you don’t care about things.
“I’m more conscious of what Arsenal is all about so I think the weight of keeping people happy and making people happy is heavier than when I arrived.”
Wenger will definitely be boosted by Walcott’s performances in recent weeks, the manager is hoping to win a major trophy this season and for that to happen, he needs everyone in the squad especially the leaders to be on top of their games. Walcott is one of the senior players at Arsenal and should he continue his fine form, he can help the team in its quest for a major title.
Wenger will now turn his attention to the Champions league game against Basel on Wednesday.
