Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes Arsene Wenger is the reason Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil have refused to commit their futures to the club.
Wenger’s contract expires at the end of the season and the French man is yet to indicate whether he will sign a new deal or not. He has said he won’t make a decision on his future until the end of the season and Keown believes that’s the reason Arsenal star players are stalling on signing a new contract.
Ozil and Sanchez have been in talks with the club to extend their deals since August but an agreement has not been reached and it doesn’t look like a deal will be struck anytime soon.
“Wenger brought them both to the club so he will have been a big part of the reason they decided to sign in the first place,” Keown wrote in the Daily Mail.
“Wenger has a global appeal that shouldn’t be overlooked, and if he decides to leave at the end of the season Arsenal might have to convince Sanchez and Ozil to sign new deals with a new manager at the club, which could be a problem.
“Wenger has said he’d rather lose them both for nothing at the ends of their contracts than sell them now, but this is a huge gamble given that their combined transfer value would exceed £80million. There are some big decisions to be made over the next couple of years, and to me, it looks as though Arsenal’s star pair won’t commit their futures to the club.”
Although no one can deny that Wenger played a key role in bringing both players to the Emirates, we must remember that they didn’t sign a contract with Wenger FC but Arsenal FC.
Some players do actually join a club because of the manager in charge but not a club like Arsenal. we will always remain a big club with or without Wenger so there’s no reason why players should tie their futures to that of the manager.
Well, it’s Keown’s personal opinion but for me, I do not think Wenger’s future is impinging contract talks with the duo. I think this is more of a financial problem rather than a managerial problem.
