Arsene Wenger’s dream of signing Borrusia Dortmund forward Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang as his next World Class star seems to be finally over.
The versatile forward who can play both as a centre forward and a wide man had been earmarked by Gunner’s boss as his annual superstar signing following previous summer recruits of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Petr Cech.
The player had earlier revealed his intention to remain at the Signal Idunal Park when questioned about rumours linking him to various clubs. But there was however still believe within the Gunners camp that the prolific striker could still be convinced about making a move to North London should a deal be agreed with Dortmund.
Following comments of Former Germany international Lothar Matthaus at the weekend that a Premier League club could pay in excess of €100m for the 26-year-old, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke reiterated their desire to keep hold of the pacey forward: “Matthaus appears to be in the know on this one…,” he told Bild.
“But in all serious, even if such an offer would come in, that would be irrelevant for us. We are simply not selling Auba.”
Aubameyang, recently crowned Africa’s Footballer of the year, has been in imperious form this season scoring 27 goals in 28 appearances this season – the same as Cristiano Ronaldo.
In 2015, the Gabon international scored 41 goals in all competitions, of which 18 came in 17 Bundesliga matches this campaign. A figure that placed him as the division’s top scorer by the year’s end.
The Gabon international also became the first player in the Bundesliga to score in each of the first eight games of the season.
