Portuguese star midfield sensation, William Carvalho, is believed to be a hot target for both Arsenal and Manchester United but reports according to Express now have it that the Gunners are in the lead for the 22-year old’s signature.
According to Express, Betting odds from Ladbrokes place Arsenal at 6/4 as against United who are positioned at second place at 4/1, and that would create the impression that the Emirates would be the most likely destination for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder if he were to make a move to England this winter.
This would seem to follow up nicely with the story in the Mail some days ago that a deal for Carvalho could be finalized within the next two weeks, the Gunners willing to pay as much as £25m for him.
Carvalho, though, wouldn’t meddle into all of the details of a potential transfer for now, even if he has maintained his admission of desiring a switch to the Premier League soon.
“My dream is to play in England” Carvalho said, per the Express.
“I know some clubs are interested but my agent Jorge is looking after it and I am relaxed.”
“Now, my mission is to work in Sporting and they will be in charge of any transfer and my future. That is very important.”
Now, Carvalho’s agent is the famed Jorge Mendes, same agent who’s negotiated deals that have seen United land two superstars last summer in Di Maria and Falcao and on that, it’d appear his ties with Old Trafford could sway the deal in United’s favour but perhaps there are talks going on between the two clubs to make the player’s preferred destination have an influence in whose bid is eventually received.
And for the bookies to be offering odds which favour Arsenal, it may well be that the Gunners have been on par with United on the financial terms being offered.
Arsene Wenger boasts an impressive assortment of attacking midfielders, with some who had been injured for long working their ways up to full fitness. However, the position of the defensive midfielder has been, in the opinion of most observers and fans, lacking in quality even if have been two dedicated staff for that role in the past two seasons, Arteta and Flamini. Neither one, though, has come across as a true warrior who can stand side-by-side with the likes of Matic, Fernandinho and Morgan Schneiderlin, some of the best in the Premier League, and for a team whose intentions should be set on winning major trophies, make-shift options should not be gloried in.
Having been eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage, there will be little motivation for Carvalho to want to stay on at the Estadio Jose Alvavade, especially as the battle for the Portuguese Championship appears to be an uninterruptible two-horse race between Porto and Benfica. He has not made secret his wish to see his career take a bigger step in a big club and this could be the window to take flight. To Arsenal.
