Arsene Wenger confirmed that Arsenal are in talks with Aaron Ramsey as they look to avoid another Jack Wilshere, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil situation with the Welshman.
Ramsey is out of contract next summer and, despite knowing this, the club have only recently begun to talk with 27-year-old. Speaking recently about the situation, Ramsey pondered if they had simply been too busy with other things to get around to him.
Or perhaps they are simply taking him signing a new deal for granted. If so, they’d be wise to tone down their arrogance.
Speaking to the press, Wenger was positive that Ramsey would sign a new deal but that means little. He’s always positive that players will sign new deals and feels they would be as happy as him to stay at the club until they are getting a telegram for the Queen on their 100th birthday.
“We are communicating,” Wenger said. “I am confident. He is not [at the] end of [his] contract. He has one and a half years to go.”
Technically, Ramsey has one year, two months and three weeks remaining, not quite a year-and-a-half.
“On my side that is clear,” Wenger continued. “We always have to find agreements. We want him to stay because he is one of the guys who has been here for a long time and will be an important player in the future of the club.
“We want the players to be happy to play for the club, and with the values we think are important for us and with the right amount of money we want to pay them. All the three have to be together.”
Ramsey will celebrate 10 years at Arsenal this summer and looks in the exact sort of form you’d want to produce if you are negotiating a new deal.
Hopefully, he’s also putting his injury problems behind him.
“He’s stronger, he has always been very fit,” Wenger said. “Sometimes it is to get to the core of the problem when you have recurrence of an injury. It is a little like an engine. Human bodies are a bit like Formula One. We have to find out where it matters and what we have to change. Sometimes [it is] one movement that you have to change and it takes time.”
