The chief negotiators at the Emirates have been giving the mandate to go all out and land Lyon midfielder, Maxime Gonalons, by Wenger’s request.
The Metro reports that the 25-year old Frenchman has been asked for by the Gunners boss as a key man for his midfield set up next season. Arsenal scouts have been keeping tabs on the Lyon man for some time and the coming summer could be the time when a formal enquiry is lodged for his services.
Some kind of change is expected to take place within the Gunners squad next season, especially in the midfield where a couple of players may leave either due to the expiration of their deals or dormancy, which could leave some space for new arrivals. Abou Diaby’s deal runs out this summer and despite initial hopes that he would return to the team this season for good – even making an appearance in the League Cup – injuries have really not let him be. Wenger had planned to curtail his workload to an extent by modeling him into a holding player but that doesn’t look like happening now and it could be Gonalons coming in to fulfill that role.
The Gunners won’t be without opposition, though, as North London rivals, Tottenham, are equally believed to be weighing up a move for him. Spurs have always made attempts to match Arsenal in every stride and while League titles and a new Stadium remain in the realm of Utopia for them, they can still muster transfer fees and wage deals which could see them compete with their rivals.
Gonalons has been at Lyon all his career, since making his first team debut in 2009, having spent the previous 10 years in their youth teams. He plays regularly as a defensive midfielder but can make good impressions in a little more advanced role.
Lyon sit at the top of the Ligue 1 table, a good two points above joint second-placed teams, Marseille and PSG, with Gonalons appearing in all but one of the 25 matches they have played so far this season.
Perhaps negotiations are ongoing at the moment to limit his fee to a reported £24m value as becoming a League Champion by May would see his value move upward.
