Manchester United are set to join Arsenal in the race to sign Benfica fullback Nelson Semedo, according to reports.
The Portuguese defender has been on Arsenal’s radar for quite sometime and it appears we would face competition for his services.
Semedo is regarded as one of Europe’s most talented fullbacks and his performances have not gone unnoticed to the big clubs. Arsenal are one of the clubs that have been monitoring the young full back and reports claim he is being lined up as a replacement for Hector Bellerin who is attracting interest from Manchester City and Barcelona.
According to Portuguese publication O’Jogo via The Daily Star, Manchester United have joined the race to sign the defender.
The Old Trafford club have been watching the Portuguese quietly for sometime and Mourinho dispatched the club’s scout to take a closer look at him in Benfica’s 2 – 0 win over Belenenses last weekend.
The defender is still under contract at Benfica until 2021 with a release clause of £40m and knowing Benfica’s history of getting the highest fee possible for their best players, Semedo is not expected to come cheap.
An Arsenal move for the defender is still far away at this stage because our interest depends largely on Bellerin’s future. We have made tying the Spaniard down to a new contract as our priority and unless the unlikely happens we won’t be making a move for Semedo.
