Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira has revealed his disappointment over the protest of the club’s fans asking Wenger to step down as boss, according to the Daily Star.

Wenger has been heavily criticized for the team’s performance this season and Vieira admitted the club was going through a tough time but insists Wenger deserves better treatment for what he has done for the club in his 20 years as manager.

Vieira believes the banner which some section of the supporters revealed against Hull City a fortnight ago was a step too far and insists Wenger deserves more respect.

“Arsenal are going through a difficult period, but I was surprised and a bit disappointed (by the banner),” he told talkSPORT.

“Fans can be frustrated, but they forget at times what Arsene has brought to the club.

“He deserves a bit more respect. Fans can boo and show their anger, but the way they did it with that banner showed a lack of respect. This is the way it is, this is football, but it shouldn’t be like that.”

Viera who is now in charge of MLS team New York City FC believes Wenger should be allowed to leave the Emirates on his own terms and when he wants to.

He added: “Arsene will know when it is time for him to go. He knows what he is doing.

“He loves the game, he works really hard, he’s a work addict.

He watches every single game in every single league and has a clear vision of what he wants to achieve. People like it or don’t like it.

“He has done a fantastic, unbelievable job for Arsenal Football Club and, with that message after the Hull game, the fans went a little bit too far.”

Wenger is reportedly now considering his future at the Emirates and could resign from his job should the fans protest continue.
