Nacho Monreal has dismissed talks of a possible return to Spain, insisting he is happy at Arsenal.
Monreal has been a key player for Arsenal in the last two seasons and is being linked with a move to Athletic Bilbao.
The 30 year old joined us from Malaga in January 2013 and has become a key player in the first team. At first it wasn’t easy for him as he had to compete with Kieran Gibbs for the left back spot but he eventually moved ahead of Gibbs last season and has now played more than a century of Premier League games for us already.
Monreal is a native of Basque, a region in Spain where Bilbao is located and the Spanish club loves signing players from that region and reports in Spain claim they have made Monreal their top target and won’t give up until they sign him.
However, the player has revealed he has no intention of returning to his homeland anytime soon, ruling out a move to Bilbao for now.
“I do not close the door to anyone and especially to Athletic because I have spoken beautifully about that club,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Star.
“Now, however, I’m not thinking about bidding farewell to Arsenal.”
The defender is settled in North London and has become a regular at a big club like Arsenal, so it is only normal that he would want to remain here.
Monreal is already 30 and considering his position is one that requires pace and Stamina, he might have just a few years of top football left in him before age begins to take its toll on him, which means a move to Bilbao could happen sooner than he expects.
But first he will have to focus on retaining his place in the starting xi when we visit Manchester United next weekend.
