Theo Walcott has revealed he had discussions with Arsene Wenger over his playing position at the beginning of the season.
The winger is in fine form for Arsenal this season, after a dismal campaign last year and he has revealed Wenger is the reason for his upturn in form.
The England international who has scored nine goals for Arsenal across all competitions this season with six of those coming in the league is the exact opposite of the player he was last season. He has now revealed that talks with Wenger is what is helping him play so well.
“At the start of the season, me and the manager sat down and I told him where I wanted to play so I don’t even have to think about anything else,” Walcott told the club’s official website, as quoted by Squawka.
“Obviously I have that experience in the central position and if I find myself there, hopefully I’ll be able to tuck away the goals.
“I’m still working hard in training, the mental side of it, the gym and everything while making sure I have time at home as well. Everything seems to be clicking.
“I just want to make sure I am the best I can be every day going into training. If I can stay fit, hopefully it should be a good season not just for me but for everyone else.”
One can see how a shift in position and the trust of a manager is important in improving a player. Walcott played primarily as a centre forward last season and was very poor now that he has returned to the flanks, he is now playing to the best of his ability.
The winger has hit double figures just once in his Arsenal career, spanning over ten years and he is just one short of hitting double figures this season with just one-third of the campaign gone. He is indeed in the form of his life.
