Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has urged Wenger to sign Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez rather than Everton’s Ross Barkley.
Both players are being linked with Arsenal as Wenger weighs up bringing in one more attacking player before the end of the transfer window.
The manager is a big admirer of both players, having tried to sign them in previous windows and they are again on his summer shortlist.
As we all know, the Gunners can’t sign the two of them this summer, meaning the boss will have to prioritise one and Smith believes Wenger should go for Mahrez.
“I’d say [Arsenal should go after] Mahrez more than Barkley,” Smith said on talkSPORT, as quoted by the Express.
“I think he’s more of a match winner and he’s a more mature player.
“I’ve just come back from Hong Kong watching Liverpool and Leicester in the Asia Trophy, and Mahrez looked sharp.
“Whether he’s playing for a move, putting himself in the shop window, I don’t know.
“He’s definitely a Champions League player, although I know Arsenal aren’t in that competition this year.”
A lot of us know that Mahrez would immediately improve our team should Wenger sign him this summer but Barkley who is a couple of years younger has the potential to be even better than Mahrez currently is.
But the question is whether Wenger still has enough patience to put his trust on a player who isn’t there just yet.
If we are looking for a player who would make an immediate impact and help us win the league next season, Mahrez would be a better signing because it may take a little longer before would begin to see the Barkley at his best on a consistent basis.
