Former Arsenal striker Charlie Nicholas believes Wenger should sell Francis Coquelin next summer.
The centre midfield is obviously Arsenal’s most competitive position, following the arrival of Granite Xhaka in the summer. It was because of the high level of competition for midfield places that Jack Wilshere decided to join Bournemouth on loan so he can play regularly.
Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla appears to be Wenger’s first choice pairing in centre midfield but Nicholas doesn’t rate the French man so high.
Nicholas believes Wilshere’s return to the Emirates at the end of the season should spell the end of Coquelin’s career at Arsenal.
Coquelin recently signed a new deal at Arsenal but Nicholas doesn’t think that would be a problem if Wenger wants to sell the midfielder.
I don’t have a problem with him getting a new deal,” Nicholas told Sky Sports, as quoted by the IBtimes Uk. “I’m not his greatest fan, but they don’t have many options in that position.
“Santi Cazorla is out for a long period, Mohamed Elneny is away and Jack Wilshere is on loan, so Arsene Wenger certainly can’t afford to let him go right now.
“However, when everybody’s fit and fresh Coquelin would be lucky to get in the 18. We simply need numbers in that department right now.
“He’ll do a job short-term and after that you’d think they’d get a decent price for him. It puts his value up and I would sell him in the summer when everybody is fit.”
You know sometimes in football, people’s opinion don’t really matter and in this case, I think Nicholas’ own doesn’t.
Coquelin appears to be our best and only true defensive midfielder, so I think it’s absurd calling for the club to sell him.
Wenger has continually played Coquelin as first choice despite the serious competition in that position. Meaning there is something special Wenger sees in the midfielder that Nicholas doesn’t.
Also Wilshere and Coquelin are two different players so I don’t see the possibility of the England man coming in to push Coquelin out of the club, it’s not just possible.
