Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has revealed Patrick Vieira was his idol as a young boy.
Xhaka joined Arsenal from Borrussia Monchengladbach for over £30m in May and the midfielder is being tipped to become a big player for the Gunners.
The Switzerland international has now revealed he looked up to Vieira while growing up and wants to emulate the Gunners legend achievements at the Emirates.
‘It’s always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League,’ Xhaka told the Premier League’s official website, as quoted by the Metro.
‘I always used to watched the games on TV and if I really had to pick one [an idol], it would be Patrick Vieira.
‘He is an idol, a role model, especially here at Arsenal.
‘He was also a world-class player for his national team and he played in the same position as me, so I would pick him.’
It is of popular opinion that Wenger has not been able to replace Vieira who was an important member of the Gunners’ Premier League winning side in 2004 all these years.
Many would be hoping Xhaka lives up to expectation and finally fill the void left by the ex France international.
Vieira made 279 league appearances for the Gunners throughout his nine year spell at Arsenal helping the club to three league titles.
