“Defense not a worry” What?
Many a gooner might have been stung by those words of Arsene Wenger following the events against Anderlecht, but it cannot really be supposed that the manager intended to dismiss the need to sign a defender in January.
Already, the drapes covering the January tranfer window are on the verge of being pulled aside and we can already feel the sprinkles of the winters chilling breeze and while all the focus today will surely be on seeing the team resurrect from that near-burial on Tuesday, the rumour mill continues to serve up juicy gist as to who could be making the walk in to the Emirates in eight weeks time.
So you were probably upset by the way Monreal naively tripped his man on Tuesday to give Anderlecht a lifeline but how would you react to your defender conspiring to get himself sent off in the first quarter of a game against Tottenham? Well, Chris Smalling has been reportedly re-emerged as one of three major defenders on Wenger’s radar next transfer window, the other two being Ron Vlaar and Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk. Smalling didn’t win many fans with his inexplicable quick double against Manchester City and though considered a decent exchange man while United were asking for Vermaelen, last weekend’s display may have many a gooner baulking at the prospect of him turning out for us.
CAMPBELL IS OFF!
Mirror Sport’s John Cross reports that the 22 year-old has become categorically fed up with Wenger’s indifference towards him and is now setting his sights at leaving the Emirates in January, even if it be on a loan spell. Campbell was expected to have a significant role in Wenger’s team this season after a stellar World Cup campaign with quarter-finalists Costa Rica. However, only one League start and 37 minutes of substitute appearances have limited him to a fringe role, a situation which has worsened with no consideration to him in the last two Match Day squads in favour of Yaya Sanogo. AC Milan and Galatasaray are among the clubs on the queue to take him and unless Wenger is overtaken by a conversion to give him more time, Campbell will not let Wenger prevent any team from taking him as he reportedly did with Benfica over the summer.
WALCOTT TO FIORENTINA?
From the possible to the amusing, Serie A side Fiorentina are said to be readying a shock loan bid for Theo Walcott. The Italian giants are believed to see a chance in convincing Wenger to let them have the winger on a six-month deal which will benefit the player in building his fitness and making full recovery away from the pressure of delivering immediately. Walcott has been away for ten months but being an important player in the Arsenal squad, it won’t be long before fans begin to make demands of him to repeat the form that saw him finish as top scorer a little over two years ago and for fear of capitulating under the tension, Fiorentina wish to help us out. Good logic huh?
As is customary, there has to be a player linked who fulfils the twine condition of “we don’t know you” and “we mightn’t need you”. Well, that is if didn’t watch him against City in the Champions League on Wednesday. Dzagoev is one of the star members at CSKA Mosow and though he was recently tied to a new contract till 2019, the club’s financial problems means the 24-year old will be one of the players they’ll look to place on the top shelf closest to the customers’ entrance, and with a host of Premier League clubs, interested, Arsenal may have their work cut out at pricing the player away at the required #16m.
