Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has signed a new contract which will keep him at the Emirates until 2022.

Boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he sees the Egyptian as a utility man who can occupy multiple positions.

The former Basel man arrived at Arsenal just over two years ago for a fee of around £7m.

But he almost departed the Gunners for Leicester last summer, although he decided to turn the Midlands outfit down.

Wenger has spoken highly of the Elneny and revealed how he intends to use him in the future.

“He had a good pre-season, he absorbed a huge quantity of work and he takes advantage of it now, so it’s down to where he is needed,” Wenger told the official Arsenal website.

“I will use him as a central defender in a three or in midfield.

“He is a fantastic team player and he is a credit to your country if you are Egyptian. He is a fantastic boy, we love him here.

“It took him some time to adapt to the intensity of the games and I think he was not aggressive enough for the Premier League [initially].

“But now he has added that to his game. People forget that Elneny is 25 years old.

“He is not 30 – he’s still a young player and his best years are in front of him.”

Elneny has made 65 appearances for the Gunners and scored twice, against Barcelona and BATE Borisov.

He has played just nine times in the Premier League this season but has featured in every Europa League fixture.

The tough-tackling midfielder wrote on Twitter earlier today: “Officially we will be together for a longer time, in order to reach what we started, and to put Arsenal in it’s deserved spot in Europe and the whole world.”

Arsenal take on Stoke on Sunday (1.30pm) when the Premier League returns after the international break.
