The majority of gooners have been pretty contented with the arrival of Gabriel but what will be the reaction when Mats Hummels, the one everyone has dreamnt of and longed for, ends up signing for Manchester United next summer?
That seems to be what the Daily Star wants us to expect with reports that an agreement has been reached between United and Dortmund for the 26-year old World Cup winning defender. According to them, a £37m deal has been assented to by both parties and regardless of what becomes of Die Borussien’s season by June, Hummels would become a player for United.
Dortmund have been on the ropes throughout the first half of this current season and really looks like a team who have lost their frame and finesse. As captain, Hummels is key to any challenge they intend to mount to lift themselves from the unenviable rock bottom spot on the BundesLiga spot and while the Champions League has been their bright spark so far, they do not look like they will be in it next season unless they win it.
Hummels has never said he would be going anywhere, actually. In fact, he reacted furiously to one reporter who had quizzed him on the United rumours recently but it is difficult to imagine a defender of his repute and ability going down with the Yellow Wall if they manage to sustain their current position till the end of the season.
He must have been irked by the massive exodus of the club’s top stars over the years and while loyalty may want to play a part in him staying no matter what – as long as Klopp stays – it could become a career threatening move to do so.
And if he did wish to go, surely Arsenal should be interested. As much as possible, fight the United bid. The clubs has reached a financial state where it can favorably compete with her rivals in the League and you wouldn’t see £37m as too huge a figure to pay for a World Class player of this caliber. He would have as much, and even more, influence on the Arsenal team than record-signing Mesut Ozil.
It is still a long way from being confirmed that United have got him.
