Reports are claiming Arsenal and Juventus could go head to head in the race to sign Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka.

Goretzka has been an ever present figure in Schalke’s first team since 2013 but the German side is having a poor season and Bild claims the midfielder could leave in the summer if they don’t secure European football.

Schalke currently sit 10th in the Bundesliga table, their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League is gradually fading away and many of their key players are being eyed up by top European clubs.

Arsenal and Juventus are the two clubs keeping tabs on Goretzka and both clubs would compete for his signature in the summer transfer window if the young star is made available.

The midfielder has been one of Schalke’s best players this season and it isn’t a surprise that he has caught Wenger’s attention already.

It is believed the lad wants to continue his development by playing in the Champions League and if Schalke can’t offer him that opportunity, he would seek for a move to a top club.

He could be faced with the dilemma of choosing his next club as Arsenal and Juventus can both offer him Champions League football. It may then come down to where he would play more regularly.

There is serious competition for midfield places at Arsenal and Juventus but I think a move to the Emirates will be of more benefit for the youngster. He would work with Wenger who has a reputation of tutoring youngsters and helping them develop into top players. He wouldc also be in line to succeed Santi Cazorla who is already closing in on the final years of his career.

The midfielder has 18 months left in his contract and is currently valued at around £13m but his transfer fee could soar up to around £20 – £25m in today’s inflated transfer market.

Whether Wenger would be willing to spend that much on a position where he has so much options remains to be seen.
