Arsenal are set to do battle with Manchester United over Jose Maria Gimenez.

The Atletico Madrid defender has long been on the radar at the Emirates, with speculations rife last summer that the Gunners would make a move for the 22-year-old.

They opted to sign Shkodran Mustafi instead – but the Daily Mail suggest Arsene Wenger is ready to rekindle his interest in Giminez.

The Uruguay defender has a release clause in his Atletico contract which is set at £56 million, but the La Liga outfit are believed to be willing to compromise on that figure, should Arsenal or United make an official offer.

Gimenez moved to Atletico in 2013 from Uruguayan top flight side Danubio.

He has gone on to be a key part in the success enjoyed by the Spanish outfit under the tutelage of Argentine boss Diego Simeone.
