If this isn’t the most bizarre rumour ever to come out of the Spanish press. Barcelona will try to sign Mesut Ozil if they can’t sign Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, according to reports.
Barcelona are struggling to convince Paris Saint Germain to sell Marco Verratti who they had identified as Andres Iniesta’s successor and have now drawn up a list of alternative targets, which includes Ozil.
Coutinho is Barca’s first alternative to Verratti but Jurgen Klopp doesn’t want to sell, prompting the Catalan’s to look at other players.
Don Balon via the Daily Cannon are now claiming Barca will make a move for Ozil if they can’t sign Coutinho.
The report claims the Catalan’s are prepared to spend up to £53m on Ozil who has just a year left in his contract.
That will represent a significant profit on the £42.5m Arsenal paid to sign the German in 2013. However, the report doesn’t make any sense if you look at the situation carefully.
It is unlikely Barcelona will want to spend that much on a player who could be available for nothing next year.
Again who would want to sign a 28 year old as a long-term successor to someone else? If Barca were looking for a successor to Iniesta, wouldn’t it make more sense for them to be targeting younger players?
Obviously, Don Balon are just looking to start up a fresh transfer rumor and they know Ozil will be a sell-able topic.
