French comedian Baptiste Lecaplain has revealed that Arsenal failed to sign Fernando Torres just before we signed Thierry Henry, according to the Metro.
Lecaplain was school mate of Wenger’s son-in-law and has been invited to Arsenal’s Colney training ground on several occasions to watch training sessions.
Speaking to former France international Franck Lebouf, Lecaplain said Wenger wanted Torres to be the club’s long-term striker.
Torres was one of Spain’s brightest talents in his early days and the comedian revealed Wenger had monitored the striker’s performances with Atletico’s youth team.
However, he couldn’t sign the striker because of the serious competition for his signature. The Spanish club were also reluctant to sell their striker who later went on to make over a hundred appearances for them before he later joined Liverpool.
Wenger moved on to Henry who became very successful with us and is now regarded as one of our best ever players. One can say it was a blessing in disguise as the French man went on to achieve the feat of Arsenal’s highest goal scorer ever.
Torres also enjoyed a wonderful career at Atletico and then Liverpool.
