Bordeaux striker Gaetan Laborde has revealed Arsenal made an inquiry about his availability earlier in the transfer window.
This would be surprising to many of us because Arsenal were in the market for a ‘world class’ striker before we eventually signed Lacazette and the fact that we made an enquiry about Laborde who can’t be classified as world class is baffling.
Although, the interest from Arsenal didn’t go beyond the enquiry stage, it was enough to flatter the 23 year old.
Speaking in an interview with football365 (via Gunnersphere), Laborde says Liverpool were also interested in signing him and he was happy to be linked with a move to the Premier League.
“It’s true, there (Arsenal and Liverpool) was indeed interest. After that, there was nothing official. I do not let that go to my head… It’s true that it’s flattering. It is part of the trust that I was talking about. It’s always good to be followed by clubs like that. These are two great clubs, but from there to say that there are official offers…”
Despite the interest in his services not turning into anything concrete, Laborde hasn’t ruled out the possibility of leaving Bordeaux this summer.
“I do not necessarily know more and I do not want to confuse my mind with that. I’m in Bordeaux and there are very important deadlines coming, I’m focused on that. I have an agent who handles all this.”
One can’t even ascertain if an enquiry was actually made or not but I think it is unlikely that we did especially as we were looking for a class of striker way better than he is.
A record of six goals in 36 Ligue 1 appearances last season wouldn’t have been enough to convince top clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool to make a move for him.
