Villareal have announced that an agreement has been reached between they and the Gooners for the transfer of Gabriel Paulista.
The news was made public via the club’s official Twitter account in a deal which will see Joel Campbell spend the next six month on loan at the EL Madrigal.
A reported fee of about £15 million was paid by Arsenal for him, in other words, the full fee of his reported €20 million buy-out clause.
The Mirror interprets the tweet as follows:
“Principle of agreement of transfer with Arsenal by Gabriel, who will say goodbye today before the party. Good luck!”
SkySports Guillem Ballague, while terming it “a good deal” for Arsenal, states that Villareal had to pay €1 million to take the 22-year old Costa Rican on loan, fending off the interest of former Manchester United manager David Moyes.
The Express had reported earlier on Saturday that Wenger had thrown in the towel on his hold on Campbell and has used him in the deal to land his target man, Gabriel.
Campbell was said not to be quite inspired on it, but got sold on the idea of another return to Spain by teammate Santi Cazorla who, of course, has spent the most part of his career with the Yellow Submarines.
The Arsenal website is yet to confirm it with other issues set to be concluded but all credible sources seem to agree that Arsenal will get the work permit over the line for Paulista. It is interesting to note he is not cup-tied and will be able to play for the Gooners in the Champions League this season.
The La Liga club revealed a thank you graphic for Gabriel in their late game against Levante Saturday night in what looks a win-win for all parties, even if Marcellino Toral would have still wanted to keep him.
