Arsenal and Chelsea are set to battle each other for the signature of Real Madrid star Karim Benzema, according to reports.

The French striker has been consistently linked to Arsenal over the years but Madrid were unwilling to let him leave. Arsenal reportedly tried to sign the striker in the last three transfer windows and now we are being linked with him again.

According to Don Balon via The Daily Star, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in signing the French striker.

The report claims Real Madrid are open to selling Benzema next summer as they believe that would be their last opportunity to get a large fee for the striker.

One would think Madrid will want to keep hold of their best players considering they have been banned from signing players for the next three transfer windows but the report reckons that Madrid wants to sign young, talented players once their transfer ban is over, so they are prepared to let their star striker leave now that they can still get a large fee for him.

The Spanish club will reportedly demand around £50m for Benzema next summer which I think should be enough to put off Arsenal as we would get better value elsewhere.

Benzema turns 29 in a few weeks, his form in recent seasons have nosedived and he is not as feared as he was in the past, so why spend £50m on him?

Arsenal have been repeatedly linked with Benzema over the years and I think that is the only reason we are being linked with him again.

Wenger signed Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna last summer, so there would be no need for another one next year.

Also Alexis Sanchez is proving to be a revelation in the new centre forward role and if we are able to get the Chilean to sign a new long term contract, there will definitely be no need to sign a striker next summer.
