Chelsea and Arsenal are battling to sign Exeter starlet Ethan Ampadu, according to reports.
Arsenal have made it a culture over the years to sign England’s brightest talents and Exeter youngster Ampadu is the latest British youngster to catch the attention of our Scouts.
The 16 year old made his senior debut for Exeter in August and has become a key member of the league two club’s first team since then. His performances so far have been superb, causing Wenger to register his interest in signing the youngster.
But according to the Daily Mirror via the Daily Star, it is West London rivals, Chelsea who are leading the race to sign the youngster.
This is a bit surprising as it was thought we had upper hand in the race to sign the defensive midfielder because his father, Kwame is a coach in our academy.
But, Chelsea have surged ahead with a £2m bid, although it shouldn’t be difficult for us to match if Wenger decides to step up his pursuit.
Should it come down to personal choice, I think we will be favorites to sign the midfielder considering the contrasting fortunes of youngsters with both sides.
Arsenal have constantly produced academy players for the first team over the years while Chelsea has been unable to promote a single youngster to their first team for over a decade.
Kwame Ampadu has helped many youngsters at Arsenal academy become top players and I’d like his son to be one of those we will produce for the first team in the future.
