Arsene Wenger is reported to be significantly close to signing Sporting Lisbon defender, Cedric Soares.
The player’s agent, Miguel Veloso, has indicated that Arsenal are amongst the clubs looking to speak with his client with the aim making a switch to London, and while he states that the interest is a testimony of Cedric’s potential, he seems very bullish on the possibility of a move happening.
In respnse to questions relating to a supposed interst in Cedric from Arsenal, Veloso said:
“We are happy his work is being recognised. Right now, we continue to negotiate the renewal of the contract between Cedric and Sporting. But nothing is agreed”
“All scenarios are possible [in January].”
The 23 year old Cedric, though born in Germany, has been at Sporting since 1999 where he has grown through the ranks of the youth teams. Now a full Portuguese International, Cedric is being mentioned in the same breath as another Arsenal target Willian Carvalho as two of the brightest emerging talents not just from Iberia but from Europe as a whole. A similarity seems to appear between both players with regard to Sporting’s unwillingness to let them go, seeking to tie them down to long term deals.
The hugely versatile Cedric will cost about £25m at the minimum, considering his ability to play not just at right back which is his most preferred position but can ably fill at the center of defence. With our first choice right back in Mattiue Debuchy still sidelined as he recovers from his ankle injury, Wenger has had to rely on youngsters Calum Chambers and Hector Bellerin to perform even beyond their years and though they’ve hardly looked overwhelmed, the manager may have good reason to seek a more natural peg, as Chambers in particular appears to be more comfortable in central defence.
Defensive additions in every position are quite needed at Arsenal at the moment, even as the few available players seem to be cramping up. Left back Kieran Gibbs has become the latest scare with his involvement in the League game at home to Burnley cast into doubt. This will add to the already absent french duo of Debuchy and Koscielny and at just the third month of the season, it must be a real concern that requires urgent attention.
Cedric has featured in all of Sporting’s games in the Champions League this season, against Maribor, Chelsea and the nerve-racking seven goal thriller against Schalke.
