Any sane football man knows that Arsenal must sign a player in the coming transfer window, and Arsene Wenger is believed to be ready to splash the cash on not just one, but two players, according to Mirror.
Wenger has had to endure torrents of reproach for the shortage his team has suffered in defense this season which has seen left back Nacho Monreal deployed in center half to not-so-good effects. Injuries to Koscielny and Mattiue Debuchy has seen the Gunners stretched at the back for the best part of the season, Wenger’s decision not to sign an extra center half in the past summer costing us.
It is now believed that the manager will make a concerted dip into the market when the window opens in five weeks time, with special attention to be on getting reinforcement for the defensive department, as the Arsenal attack is already undoubtedly well stocked.
Not just defenders are Arsenal going to look to buy, but a defensive minded midfielder as well, especially seeing that Mikel Arteta will probably still use the treatment room as a revolving door between now and June.
There’s been a few names mentioned in the breath of a potential move to the Emirates in the capacity of filling in the defensive midfield position, but top on the list are Sevilla’s Grzergorz Krychowiak and Everton’s James McCarthy, per the Mirror.
Krychowiak has been reportedly watched by the personnel from the Arsenal scout team and have given good recommendations to Wenger of his ability to the job required. The 24-year old Polish International only joined Sevilla this summer but has already impressed enough to attract the interest of Europe’s bigger wigs, with Inter Milan the main rival to beat for his signature. According the latest football betting odds, Arsenal is more likely to sign the player than Inter Milan. The Andalusian club will demand no less than £18m in order to let Krychowiak go and unless Wenger decides the price is too high, he would have a significant improvement on the defensive aspects of the shield provided at the moment to the back four by either Arteta or Flamini.
Unless he decides to search closer to home, at Merseyside precisely.
James McCarthy has been dependable for Roberto Martinez’s Everton since his move from Wigan last summer and could be tempted to make a bigger move in January. At 24, he is of the average age of the Arsenal team and his acquaintance with the Premier league makes him another viable prospect. It would be incredibly difficult to convince Martinez to let McCarthy go but it could be more about the midfielder’s desire to move on.
Ipswich’s Tyrone Mings is still being monitored by Arsenal and though he is presently a left back, the belief is that he has a long-term future at center half, perhaps the future partner to Calum Chambers.
It has somewhat cooled on the heat about Virgil van Dijk and Chris Smalling who have long been linked as the possible center back recruits, but there could still be a move for Aston Villa’s captain, Ron Vlaar, with an £8m bid possibly on the horizon.
