Emiliano Martinez has completed a move to Getafe on a season long loan, the club has confirmed.

Martinez was expected to remain at the club as back up to Petr Cech next season, as reports continued to link David Ospina away from the club but it is the Argentine who will now be plying his trade elsewhere next term.

Arsenal have now confirmed, the 24 year old will spend the whole of next season at the Spanish club as he bids to continue his development by playing regularly.

A statement in the club’s official website read:

“Emi heads to Spain to gain further first team experience. We’d like to wish him well for the year ahead.”

After spending last season as third choice behind Cech and Ospina, the move to Getafe where he is expected to be the No. 1 will represent a huge step in his development.

And its effect in Arsenal’s plans for the goalkeeping department means Ospina will no longer be leaving the club this summer. The Colombian was expected to leave and very little of us at the end of last season expected to see him return for pre-season at the Colney training ground.

In an interview after our Emirates Cup against Benfica on Saturday, Ospina dropped a hint that he could remain next season, saying:

“I have a contract here, I’m happy and I’m going to fight to the end, I want to continue and win a job.

“That’s what I’m working for, I’ve been working for three years and now I’m waiting for the opportunity.”

Martinez move to Getafe has all but confirmed that the Colombian will remain as backup to Cech once again.

Many of us didn’t actually see this coming but I think the club has made the right decision as regards the future of our goalkeepers.
