Another defender has been added to the ranks of the Arsenal as the club has agreed terms with Swedish youngster, Kristopher Da Graca, for his first professional contract.
The 17-year old has only just joined the Gooners from Swedish club Hisingsbacka last summer and has been a regular part of the Arsenal Under-18s. He is a youth International with the Swedish Under-18s.
Da Graca joins a host of other academy stars who have made the step up from amateur to professional over the past few months, a list which includes Chiori Johnson, Tyrell Robinson, Jack Jebb and Stefan O’Connor, who has already made his first team debut this season in the Champions League win over Galatasaray.
While the signing of a 17-year old midfielder in Krystian Bielik (not confirmed yet by the way) may have been accepted by the majority of Gooners, Wenger will surely not be relying on anyone of his recently signed 17-year old’s as the emergency center-half options later in the season. Already, it does appear as though he does not have sufficient faith in Calum Chambers as a center-half at the moment, choosing instead to use full-backs in that position when Koscielny had been injured. Isaac Hayden has been in and around the first team for a while too but he has not got much of a look in.
Implying that the Wenger’s search for new additions in defence will continue and with about a fortnight to go before the window slams shut, you wonder if he would eventually sign anyone. There have been mentions about Winston Reid and Virgil van Dijk as the possible targets but both managers of West Ham and Celtic are not eager to let them go at this moment of their respective campaigns.
Maybe in the near future, Arsenal may start relying on internal solutions to sort out defensive problems and that is why this move of handing Da Graca a professional contract may prove significant. Rivals United have been able to call on two of their young prospects Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett to fill gaps left by first team regulars nd even if they’v not been perfect, it sure does help their further developments and possible elevation into the first team proper.
