Arsenal duo Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere are set to return to training in time to face West Ham and Atletico Madrid.
Both midfielders missed Arsenal’s defeat away at Newcastle at the weekend after suffering injuries in the second leg of the side’s Europa League quarter-final with CSKA Moscow.
While Ramsey managed to complete 90 minutes in Moscow, Wilshere was substituted in the 69th minute of the clash with an ankle problem.
After Arsenal secured their place in the Europa League semi-finals, Ramsey uploaded a gruesome picture to Instagram showing six staples in his leg. However, according to The Evening Standard, both Ramsey and Wilshere will return to training at London Colney this week.
The Gunners host West Ham at the Emirates on Sunday and Arsene Wenger may be tempted to rest the pair as he plans for next Thursday’s first leg against Atleti. David Ospina has also returned to full fitness following an ankle injury and there are hopes that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will return for the second leg. Laurent Koscielny, meanwhile, is a doubt as he works his way back from an Achilles injury.
Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Alex Iwobi to raise their games when Arsenal face Atletico Madrid. ‘The first leg is at the Emirates and [Arsene] Wenger has to find a way of replicating how Arsenal played when they beat CSKA Moscow 4-1 at home in the quarter-finals,’ he told the Daily Mail.
