The door remains open for Arsenal to swoop for one of the World’s most sought after strikers as reports from France according to Daily Star suggest PSG are set to discipline star players Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi for giving themselves extended winter holidays, and there is also the belief that they will both be placed on the exit list consequently.
Cavani has especially been tipped to move away from Paris in the near future with more and more rumours of him being increasingly unsettled with the consecutive Ligue 1 Champions.
He had been left out of the squad’s training camp at Marrakech and it appears Laurent Blanc is set to call it quits with the 27-year old Uruguayan. There is the expectation that they would be willing to sell to any club that would be willing to match their demands for him, having paid all of £55m to Napoli for his services in 2011.
Wenger is a professed admirer of Cavani and though he dismissed the report of him making a £62m bid, he has yet to state that he is not in the running for his signature.
After trying and failing to sign his Uruguayan teammate from Liverpool in 2013 and with another South American forward already justifying his exalted appraisal of forwards from that part of the world, Wenger will be encouraged to push further to lure El Matador to the Emirates, especially as he doesn’t seem to be repairing his reputation there.
It’s tempting to dismiss Cavani’s abilities on the basis of his subpar seasons at PSG but by the standards he had set at Palermo and Napoli, he still has the attention of the world as one of the best and a better environment where he is truly valued could be the propeller to recapture his menacing touch.
Diego Costa has shown why the presence of a real predator can do when given half chances in the opponents’ box, and while we have high hopes for Danny Welbeck to finally come good sooner than later, the capture of Cavani will not only give us a potent target man who will keep defenders on their toes for 90 minutes, he is experienced in top level football with regular appearance in the Champions League over the past seasons. Cavani, with Marek Hamsik and Lavezzi, were the core of the dangerous frontline which pushed Juventus all the way in the battle for the Scudetto some seasons past, the closest any team has come to challenging them.
PSG will visit London for the Last 16 of the Champions League in February and it is doubtful that Cavani would have moved to the Emirates before then as they will still fancy him to see out the remaining months of the current campaign before a deal is agreed in the summer. However, a stunning fee might still convince them otherwise.
