Arsenal has begun preparations for next season with the contract extension of youngster Jon Toral.

This report is according to The Independent, who claim that Arsenal have extended the contract of the 20-year-old midfielder.

Toral joined Arsenal in the summer of 2011, along with fellow compatriot Hector Bellerin from Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia academy.

The Spaniard, who can play either as a central midfielder or a winger, signed his first contract at Arsenal in February 2012 when he turned 17.

His contract at Arsenal was due to end in the summer of 2015. But Arsenal has made use of their one-year extension option, to keep the promising midfielder at the Emirates for another term.

In the start of the 2014/2015 season, Toral was sent out on loan to Championship side Brentford, where he has made 34 appearances for the club, scoring six goals.

In February this year – while speaking to The Independent, Toral said that he hoped his performances at Brentford would convince the Gunners to give him a new contract for next season.

“I am finishing a contract this season and Arsenal have a preferential option,” he said.

“I work hard every day here at Brentford but my goal is that Arsenal give me a new contract for next season. I am working for it.”

Toral’s contract extension will come as good news to many Arsenal fans who will be hoping to see the young promising Barca product shine in the Arsenal senior team soon.

He is a pretty good player from the look of things and Arsenal would be wise to keep him and give him a few opportunities to see what he can do. It would be a shame if Arsenal sell him and buy someone else for a hefty amount who does not deliver anything, just like they have done with Afobe and Welbeck.
