Schalke have insisted that they have no desire to sell coveted midfielder Leon Goretzka in the January transfer window.

The Germany midfielder’s current contract expires in the summer and is being heavily linked with a move across his country to Bayern Munich.

However, European clubs likes of Barcelona, Arsenal, Juventus and Liverpool have also all been linked with him, with the quartet all reportedly planning to approach now to beat Bayern to the punch and sign the highly-rated star in January.

However, Schalke insist that Goretzka’s departure in January is not an option – with the club admitting they would prefer him to let him leave on a free at the end of the season.

Club’s CEO Christian Heidel said in the interview with Bild: “For us, always, there were only two options – that Goretzka renews his contract or he stays until 2018.

Selling him was never an option for us.”

According to the Bild Schalke are going to offer Goretzka a new three-year deal worth £150,000 a week – easily making him the highest-paid player in the Royal Blues’ history.

Leon Goretzka is an academy product of Schalke. He has played in 126 games so far and scored 18 goals for the club. The 22-year-old talent is already an important player of German national team. He won the FIFA Confederations Cup with Joachim Law’s side.
