Olivier Giroud is like marmite; you either love him or you hate him. Right now, it would be fair to say that most Arsenal fans love the Frenchman – and with good reason. The Gunners star has now scored in each of his last five club appearances in all competitions and he is starting to stake a claim to lead the line as Arsenal’s main man once again, providing the injury sustained in the 4-0 victory over Swansea City isn’t bad enough to keep him sidelined.

In years gone by, Giroud has gone on similar scoring runs but he has never managed to hold a place in Arsenal’s starting line-up. The France international now has a genuine opportunity to carry the weight of expectation as Arsene Wenger’s star striker and it would be foolish to back against the Gunners forward on current form; he has scored 13 goals with his last 18 shots on target.

Arsenal fans have been treated to a number of memorable moments already this year and Giroud’s scorpion kick against Crystal Palace will be remembered as one of the best goals in Premier League history.

To be fair to Giroud, he has worked tirelessly to get his place back in the starting line-up and if anyone deserves some good fortune, it is him. Arsenal supporters are beginning to warm to the 30-year-old and the manner of his goals have helped to win over some of his biggest critics. In years gone by, Giroud has coasted through the final 20 minutes of matches but the Gunner striker has notched six during that period this season – a sign that he is now focused for the entire contest.

With an FA Cup fourth round clash and a trip to league leaders Chelsea fast approaching, fans will be expecting Giroud to replicate his current form in the big games. The France star has gone missing far too many times on the big stage during his Arsenal career and it is time for the 30-year-old to step up and be counted.

Important goals against Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain earlier this season were welcomed by fans but supporters are well within their rights to expect a lot more from Giroud in the coming months. With a black cloud circling over Alexis Sanchez’s Arsenal future, this could be the perfect moment for the Frenchman to steal the limelight as Wenger’s main man.

Olivier Giroud is never going to be the world class striker that Arsenal fans want but there’s no reason why he cannot do a job at the forefront of Wenger’s attack. The Gunners should ride on Giroud’s confidence whilst he is in blistering form; it probably won’t last forever. But for now, enjoy one of the most prolific goal scoring streaks in Arsenal’s long-standing history and pray for more golden Giroud moments in the near future.
