Reports from the Daily Mail suggest Arsenal are preparing a bid for Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial should they fail to sign Kylian Mbappe from Monaco this season.
The Gunners have already seen a £87m bid rejected early this month as Arsene Wenger hopes on strengthening his side ahead of next season.
Wenger is prepared to pay £40million for Martial, who fell out of favour at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho last season and started fewer than half of United’s Premier League games.
The Arsenal manager fears that Mourinho would never agree to a deal because of the personal animosity between the two men.
Martial did not have the best of seasons last year and was publicly criticised by United manager Jose Mourinho.
A bid of around £40m may test United’s resolve and give Arsenal funds towards a move, with the Mail reporting that “insiders say Wenger believes 18-year-old Mbappe could have the same impact as Thierry Henry.”
