It will be a vital couple of weeks ahead for Arsenal’s season and Wenger will want as many players available as possible for the FA Cup, League and Champions League actions that will be involved.
He will be happy with the continued return of most of the injured players, and will be looking forward, in two weeks time, to selecting England midfielder, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, again.
The Ox’s last game was at City last month and has been out with a recurrence of the groin injury suffered in December. As one of those who has played the most matches for Arsenal this season, Wenger would want him to be back as soon as possible to bolster his options of making varied selections for different games and the manager has intimated that he may not have to wait more than a fortnight to have him back.
Meanwhile, Wenger will have the opportunity to have Alexis and Ozil playing together again as the Chilean has been declared ready for the Tuesday night game at home to Leicester. The former Barcelona man has been the star of the Emirates this season, with 14 of his 18 Arsenal goals scored in front of the red-and-white supporters.
“Alexis will be back in the group and we don’t have any injuries from Saturday. Everybody else looked fine yesterday.” Wenger said in his press conference on Monday.
But beyond his goals, Wenger values the ‘atombomber’ for his work rate and the physical edge he brings to the team, even confessing that he was missed in the North London derby defeat.
“He’s our best goalscorer and one of our hardest-working players in the team. Physically I think we suffered a little bit on some occasions on Saturday and it’s good to have him back.”
Not many of the players at Wenger’s disposal have been at Alexis’ level though each one has contributed significantly according to his ability. The Ox has, though, has taken special interest in matching up to the Chilean’s incredible hunger for the ball and even if he has not weighed in with as much goals or assists, his intensity has not gone unnoticed by observers.
It does seem like he may not be ready for the visit of Middlesborough in the FA Cup but could be good enough to go to Crystal Palace before Monaco come to town for the much awaited first leg of the Round-of-16 Champions League tie.
