Arsene Wenger has assured fans Olivier Giroud he will play a key role for Arsenal this season, despite the French man’s difficult start to the current campaign.
Giroud is yet to start a league game for Arsenal this season, following his late return from pre-season and a subsequent toe injury.
Alexis Sanchez claimed the centre forward spot in his absence and the French striker has been made to settle for a place on the bench.
But Giroud proved his worth after he came on as a substitute against Manchester United to help us secure a 1-1 draw.
It wasn’t the first time that the striker is making an impact off the bench this season as he also scored two goals in our 4-1 win against Sunderland a fortnight ago as a substitute.
And Wenger believes he can accommodate both Giroud and Sanchez in his starting xi, putting an end to concerns about Giroud’s long term future.
When asked about Giroud battling for a starting berth, Wenger said:
“I consider him to be a regular player. He had a long holiday [after the Euros], after that he was injured and now he’s just coming back for a few games.
“It’s true that in the past two games he has been a bit frustrated but that’s normal because he’s ready to go again.
“The solution of Alexis up front has worked well and I have two options at the moment.
“Olivier Giroud is in both options because Alexis can play on the flank. Olivier can only play through the middle, so I can sometimes marry the two together.”
Giroud’s goal against Manchester United made sure we remained on track in the title race and we still sit fourth on the Premier League table.
The French striker will be hoping his form will convince Wenger to hand him his first league start when we face AFC Bournemouth.
