Arsene Wenger has revealed what he thinks Arsenal needs to do this summer to overhaul Chelsea at the top of the table next year.

The Gunners who missed out on the Champions League for the first time in 21 years finished 18 points behind winners Chelsea. Despite finishing that far off the Champions, Wenger believes we are just a couple of signings away from challenging for the title.

Wenger says he disagrees with the popular belief that the squad needs a major overhaul this summer, he stressed that one or two world class signings will be enough to take us back to the top of English football.

Wenger told reporters:

“I think this group of players is good enough to come back.

“They have learned a lot and they have gone through difficult periods this season and they have bounced back in a very strong way.

“I think that will help them, absolutely, next season.

“But first I think we have to keep 90 per cent of these players together and find one or two more who strengthen the group but we don’t need a lot. We don’t need many. But we need maybe top quality.”

Wenger’s comments will definitely worry a lot of fans who are keen to see the club do better next year. Throughout the course of the season, the team showed they were far off from competing at the top (take the Bayern Munich games as a case study) and the boss’ assesment wouldn’t go down well with many Gooners.

Our rivals will use the summer transfer window to improve and get better, so we’ll have to do more than signing a couple of world class players to catch up with them.

First, we’ll have to keep Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez both of whom will resume talks to extend their contracts in the summer and also brig in as many as four to five world-class quality.
