Chelsea‘s ability to bounce back to the disappointment of losing to Tottenham by beating Leicester City without Diego Costa must be depressing for their title rivals, according to Pat Nevin.
The former Chelsea winger was impressed by how well his old side coped without their top scorer this weekend as they strolled to a comfortable 3-0 victory at the King Power Stadium.
Eden Hazard replaced Costa up front as a ‘false-9’, and duly set up the first goal for Marcos Alonso, who chipped in with a surprise brace against the champions.
Nevin enjoyed Antonio Conte’s ability to rally his troops after a difficult few days, but says it’ll be grim viewing for the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham as they chase Chelsea in this season’s title race.
‘The most important thing was the three points but just as important was the fact that once again Antonio found a way to win under changed circumstances,’ Nevin wrote in his column for Chelsea’s official site.
‘Of course it has been a very settled side of late, but it only became settled after a radical change following the Arsenal defeat back in September. There was a need to change the methodology for the Bournemouth game when Diego was suspended and the boss surprised a few with his Pedro, Hazard and Willian trinity up front.
‘It worked but Leicester away was a much bigger test. Well it appeared so before the game anyway. Once again the manager made the right call and this must be particularly depressing to watch for everyone else, a problem raises its head and Chelsea figure it out in double-quick time.’
