The BBC officially announce Arsenal look set to sign Borussia Dortmund star Sokratis Papastathopoulos in a stunning £16million swoop.

The Greece defender, 29, has just one year left on his contract having spent five seasons with the German giants since arriving from Werder Bremen.

Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is attempting to overhaul the Gunners’ defence and has earmarked Papastathopoulos as the first signing of the Unai Emery era.

It’s reported Arsenal had originally offered £13million for the player, but were happy to pay the extra and meet Dortmund’s asking price.

With Laurent Koscielny likely to miss the start of the new campaign an experienced body is needed and it appears the Greece star fits the bill.
