The summer transfer window of 2013 was the biggest and fulfilling for the fans of Arsenal as Arsene Wenger shattered his frugal transfer policy and sanctioned a record £42million deal for Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. The German playmaker joined with the pedigree of not just an experienced player but a top-notch midfielder who is essentially a game changer.
Ozil had penned a five year contract at that time and despite being in the final year of the same contract, he has evaded signing new contract with the Gunners and he has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United. If he does not sign a contract with Arsenal, the implication is that he’ll walk out of the club at the end of the season as a free agent.
There has been a great divide in opinion over Arsene Wenger’s faith in the star. While some fans have called for his sale, others have argued that he still has quality buy may have left the club mentally. The German international has neither been here nor there this season, he has struggled to find form and we can safely conclude that we do not know what he means to the club. Don’t call him a liability though.
Against Manchester City earlier today, Ozil who was really majestic in his last away game at Everton was mostly anonymous as he misplaced his passes with reckless abandon and could not impose himself in the game. At Goodison Park, Ozil created eight chances, provided an assist and scored a goal himself.
Methinks Ozil is a world class player but he may have set his sight on leaving Arsenal at the end of the season. Arsenal need not look too far for his replacement as Nigerian international Alex Iwobi has exhibited quality but still needs to improve upon some aspects of his game. Arsenal have been linked with a move for Julian Draxler and Thomas Lemar but it is left to be seen if who replaces the Germany international if he eventually leaves.
If Mesut Ozil’s time at Arsenal is up, French tactician Arsene Wenger should also be brave and throw in the towel.
