Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Thomas Lemar from Monaco with the Ligue one giant rejecting a bid of £92m on transfer deadline day.

Monaco offloaded a large number of their title-winning squad this summer, amassing in excess of £300million.

Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva both joined Manchester City, while Tiemoue Bakayoko went to Chelsea and Kylian Mbappe to Paris Saint-Germain on a loan-to-buy deal.

Now, vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has claimed they resisted Arsenal’s attempts to sign Thomas Lemar because they did not need the money

The outgoings have left the Ligue 1 champions in an incredible financial position, but means their squad is a little threadbare.

And the club’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has revealed this is the reason they rejected Thomas Lemar’s move to Arsenal on deadline day.

However, Vasilyev has insisted after this summer’s outgoings the club are no longer in a position where they will be forced into deals.

“In 2015 we had to sell in order to meet FFP conditions, so it was more of an obligation,” he added.

“We are, currently, financially safe and sound. You sell when you think it’s the right time.

“You’ve got to accept the risk [to then sell someone at a lower price the next time round] and it’s by taking risks that we have got here.”
